Background

In the vibrant heart of O‘ahu lies the esteemed Neal S. Blaisdell Center, a hub for arts and culture in Hawai‘i. Erected in 1964 to honor the state’s veterans and war heroes, the original complex boasted cutting-edge facilities including an arena, concert hall, and exhibition hall. Today, the Blaisdell Center welcomes close to 800,000 visitors annually, firmly embedded in the local fabric.

Yet, with time taking its toll on the campus and a growing demand for expanded capacity, the City of Honolulu embarked on a comprehensive plan to revitalize the 22-acre complex for future generations. Leading this design endeavor were Snøhetta and WCIT, collaborating with AECOM. Their vision encompasses a new performance hall, exhibition space, sports pavilion, parking facility, and reimagined public areas. This revitalization not only preserves and modernizes the existing historic structures but also fosters a deeper connection between the site and the people, culture, and storied past of Honolulu.
